The Importance of Hydraulic Hose Size
Like most providers, HydPower use Dash Numbers as our method of measurement to identify the required hose and fitting size. The inner diameter (I.D) is actually in sixteenths of an inch. An example of this might be: -08 which is ½” ID hose. Most of the worlds hydraulic fluid power industry uses this method to measure the inside diameter of the hose.
Not sure where to find the size of your hose? Start by looking along what we call the layline. This will display all of the key data you need for a particular hose. However, if the original print has worn or faded away, you will need to cut the hose and accurately measure the inside diameter. Make sure you measure the overall assembly length before cutting the hose. It is critical to select the correct size hoses + types for each application. Incorrect selection of hose + adaptor size can cause losses of up to 50% in overall efficiency. It may also lead to major overheating of the system leading to premature failure.
The correct ID ensures appropriate flow velocity. A flow that is too high creates turbulent paths inside the hose and can cause leaks or damage the entire system while a flow with speed that is too low can cause the whole system to be slow or unresponsive.
To identify the proper internal diameter of the hose, there is a Flow Capacity Nomogram at the end of this article.
